Hello [FIRST_NAME], [LAST_NAME],

Congratulations on making the decision to become an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor! Please follow the steps in this email to get started with the preparation for your first day which is coming up fast.

There is a non-refundable $50 fee if you sign up for this class and can not meet the minimum skills expectation of a regular working Lifeguard, so please make sure that you are prepared in your basic lifeguard and C-PRO skills. If you have doubts about your skills, you should call to discuss anything you are unsure of. Do not wait until the day to test your skills if you are unsure.

Instructor Candidate Prerequisite work

There are a few immediate things that you need to do upon confirming registration:

-You will be receiving a link to your instructor candidate portal at redcrosslearningcenter.org from your instructor shortly after registering. (if it has been more than a few days and you have not gotten the link please follow by replying to this email). Follow that link and it should bring you to the online candidate portal so you can access the orientation and prerequisite content. Complete this before the first day of class.

These are the things you will find on the Red cross learning center. You must complete each of the following as part of the online pre-class session:

-Orientation to the Lifeguarding Instructor course

-Orientation to the American Red Cross

-Precourse Exam

You must correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions on the Precourse Exam.

Make sure that you are getting emails from me- Lui about the class and any details that you need or that may have changed.

You will need following materials for the class

* A Hip Pack (optional for the class)

* Pediactric as well as Adult size resuscitation masks

You can purchase one set here to be picked up in class

You will need to bring a printed version of the Lifeguarding Instructors Manual which you can purchase from the Red Cross or print from the free download in the materials section.

You will need to bring at least a digital copy of the regular lifeguarding manual so bring a tablet or a laptop with it.

First day of class you will need to show your skills to continue.

The Precourse Skills Session is an in-person session and includes an evaluation of your basic lifeguarding skills and CPR Rescue skills. These are the BASIC skills that you should have mastered as an entry level lifeguard. The LGI class is not designed to prepare you for these skills. Make sure you are sharp with all three victims for CPR. You must successfully complete the Precourse Skills Session to continue in the instructor course. Please bring the following documents to the precourse session:

*Proof that you will be at least 17 years of age by the end of the instructor course.

*Proof that you possess a current basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/ AED certificate.

The instructor course includes four practice-teaching assignments that will give you experience in presenting information in a lecture or guided discussion format, using audiovisual equipment, conducting land-based and in-water skill sessions and scenarios, evaluating performance and giving feedback. A certified instructor trainer will evaluate your practice-teaching assignments. At the end of the course, you will take an instructor written exam covering the information taught in the instructor course.

In order to receive certification as a Lifeguarding instructor, you must complete the online prerequisite, successfully complete the in-person precourse session, attend all course sessions, demonstrate proficiency in all skills, actively participate in all course activities, successfully complete all practiceteaching assignments and score at least 80 percent on the instructor written exam.

I look forward to having you as an instructor candidate in this class.

EMAIL AND COMMUNICATION FOR CLASS INFORMATION

It is your responsibility to make sure that you are getting the class emails. You will immediately receive a confirmation email from us for your registration. If you do not receive that, you should call me at 949 5271814 or email lui@breakwateraquatics.com to fix the communication problem. Make sure that our emails are not going to your spam folder. These classes change often based on facility availability and class enrollment.

*Cancelation Policy

CPR/BLS Class refund and cancelation policy

There is no rebooking fee if you reschedule at least 48 hours before the class. A $20 rebooking fee will be charged if you reschedule within 24 hours of the class. If you cancel less than 4 hours before the class or do not show for class it is considered a No-Show and you forfeit your registration fee.

Please click here to fill out a refund request form

ONLINE COMPONENT- Most of our CPR and BLS classes are blended learning classes which is made pretty clear at the time of registering. If you show up to class without proof of completion you will not be allowed to attend that class and will be required to reschedule to a later date.

Lifeguard class refund and cancelation policy

We really didn't want to do it but it seems that a number of class registrants are unable to commit to a schedule. If you cancel within 12 hours of the start of the class or don't show, you will not be refunded. If you cancel your class within 72 hours of the class you will be charged a $30 cancellation fee which helps us pay for the increased preparation costs (materials and additional Instructors/staff as well as rental fees of the facility) that we take on with each enrollment. Please manage your time so we can manage ours.

WSI Class refund and cancelation policy

For WSI Class there is an additional Online Enrollment fee of $38 that is non-refundable paid to the Red Cross at the time of Registration so the total for a WSI Reschedule is $78.

The same cancellation rules apply. 72 hours for no fees. After 72 hours the $78 reschedule fees apply. Cancellations within 12 hours before the class are considered no shows.

*DOES THE Lifeguard CLASS COME WITH CPR AND AED?

-Yes. Every American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED.

TITLE 22, Blood Born Pathogens, Emergency O2, are not included in the basic training. These are different classes or Modules.

NOT PASSING THE PREREQUISITE TESTING

Lifeguarding- If you are unable to pass the test for a lifeguard class that you have signed up for your registration fee will be returned to you minus a $30 booking fee for securing your spot. If you are unsure of your skills you can schedule to attend a testing session free of charge during any of our scheduled lifeguard classes. This will give you an indication of your ability to pass our test.

Lifeguarding Instructor- If you are unable to pass the test for the Lifeguard Instructor class you will be charged a $100 booking fee due to the expectations and preparations for this class being so much higher. We would encourage you to review your skills and be sharp in your CPR knowledge before enrolling in our instructor courses. Please call ahead of time if you have any questions.

*WHY ARE OTHER TRAINING CLASSES SO EXPENSIVE? IS IT A DIFFERENT CLASS?

-It is the exact same material and Certification. Training Partners of the Red Cross can charge what they determine their class should cost based on their expenses. At Breakwater Aquatics we are fortunate to have low operating expenses and our priority is the training so we try to keep the price of the class low. Our instructors are some of the most veteran Guards and Instructors from Aquatics programs in the City of Long Beach and the surrounding areas.

*WILL THIS CLASS GET ME A JOB

-Jobs vary in what they require. A Lifeguard Training Certification is the minimum but many places require both the LGT and the Water Safety Instructor certification (WSI) which is for teaching ARC swim lessons.

*DO I NEED TO TAKE AN ONLINE CLASS ALSO?

-There are two types of classes with the Red Cross

1. IN-PERSON where all the material is covered in the classroom.

2. BLENDED LEARNING CLASSES where the student is required to create an American Red Cross Account online and then enroll for the online portion of the class. Please take note of they type of class you sign up for.

*Are there HIDDEN FEES WITH YOUR REGISTRATION

-Often classes are "BLENDED" and require registering to an online portion of the class. We include that online fee in our classes. Our class fees whether blended or not, are exactly as they are advertised. The Class fee includes all of the fees of the class and PPE Required including the CPR Mask. The required class Manuals for the class are your responsibility to purchase from the American Red Cross.

* I lost my cert, Where can I find a copy of it?
